late night pisgah epicness, demon showdown avoided, nintendo chat room

wednesday totals- 3.5 miles at baker st, 6-7 miles snowshoe running, 2.5 hours hiking

i got out of work late but made it to baker st in time to cool down with the regular everyday normal crew. that night and into thursday morning, me and sontag and rock (english teachers cringe at my disregard for grammar) set out on a snowshoe trek in pisgah. we parked at gregs, borrowed some gear, then got started. the trails were groomed so the going was easy at first. that changed drastically when we got to the ridge trail where the toughest climbing was. we had to break trail and the snow was knee deep in a few spots. the hardest part was the thick layer of ice on top of the snow. we had to work hard to punch through it, then when we would lift our feet they would get hung up on the huge pieces of ice. i fell over a lot, much like uncle paulie in rocky 4, 'oh ! oh, damn!' (i tried to find a clip of this but i came up empty). surprisingly, it didnt bother me much (the terrible footing, that is. but i am extremely upset about not finding that rocky 4 clip), i think because i wasnt concerned with how fast we went. i was not expecting to see any other human tracks out there, but someone had come in through kilburn and linked up with the ridge trail. the boot prints were very small, and looked fresh. i was amazed at how long this persons stride was. something about it didnt add up, but greg assured me that it was probably just a demon or ghost of some sort that was haunting us. i guess in the end it decided not to kill us. i think the mountain lions felt the same way, so that was cool. the ridge trail seemed endless. it took 2 hours and it usually takes 30 minutes. we finally got done with that trail and got back onto the groomed snow highway. it was easy running the rest of the way. (it took 3:42, i have run it 1:21) we got back to gregs around 1230 am and he had chromium replacement beverages for us. i got home in time to get 5 hours of sleep, but it felt like 5 minutes. i was dead at work today but i didnt care. thats the price i pay for an epic adventure.

  2. Funny video. I love the Mike Tyson's Punch Out and Contra stuff. Too hilarious. M.C. and I can relate to that part. We didn't like to use the 30 guys either! Ha Ha.

  3. How the hell do I get down and roll wit that crew?!?!?

PS-Metroid cheat code: "Justin Bailey"...4 real bitchez

  4. ya that guy is wicked funny. those 3 songs are all he has about being a regular guy. he has some other stuff on you tube but its not on the same level. and as for the 2 girls 1 cup reference, i almost threw up too. its so gross but everyone should have to see it so they can experience the same horror i had to. just make sure you have like 50 cups to puke into.

  5. I was the best at Punch Out, Metroid, and Zelda. I was the first in my hood to beat Tyson at age 8 or 9. I got the girl to strip down to her bikini in Metroid. And I once beat Zelda in 2 hours without dying just to kill time before an indoor soccer game at W. Warwick Civic Center.

P.S. I scored a goal from behind half court in that game just before the buzzer went off. Bow down to the man!

  6. Now you know why I suck at running. I accomplished everything a man needs to accomplish by age 12. I have nothing left to prove! ;)

  7. Don't forget the documented basketball culture battle victory.

But who has the most world records in Mario Kart?

P.S. Boj - I'm jealous of your epic adventure....

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think Greg was the best at Mario Kart. He had the majority of records. Jonny, you were definitely the second best with like 5 or 6 records. I only had 1 record on one of the ghost towns.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Shouldn't you guys be arguing about video game records on your own blogs?

    ReplyDelete
  10. dont worry about it, cash. its cool. anyway, greg is def the best at mario kart. a few years ago i was dogsitting at his house and i spent about 14 hours a day for 3 days getting all the records. when he got back he beat almost all of them on like the first try. i went back the next weekend and he had all of them, and with ridiculous times, like if someone ran a mile in 2:40.

    ReplyDelete
  11. in case anyone missed it, i am the best at tetris, like if someone ran a mile in 2:39.99

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thanks for the props on Mario Kart. There is no doubt that I reign supreme on that game. I think it was my true calling in life to be world champion in that. Boj, I'm sure you are the best at tetris, just like the math game on Fyffe's phone.

  13. after reading the posts i dusted off the nintendo and fired it up. After a couple blicking red lights and hurricane force blows into games she fired right up.......probably not going to leave the basement today..........or win father of the day......but going to try like hell to beat contra

  14. ha ha are you gonna use the 30 lives code ?

    ReplyDelete
  15. yar i did, but i also realized that a mouse fart will make the game freeze, i also have to give myself the "best fighter in blades of steel" award, no button mashing, pure skillz-with a z.

  16. Even though you don't know who I am, I was amused by this thread so i think I'll chime in. I was mostly frustrated with nintendo games, those games were really, really hard. Metroid, forget it. The real early games like Ice Climber and Ninja Kid were impossible. Tetris and Kung-Fu were my best games. Don't sleep on RBI baseball and Hoops.

    ReplyDelete
  17. its cool, man. thanks for keepin it goin. tetris rules!

  18. I'm not ready to crown Greg Mario Kart champion, and yes I have the world record sheet somewhere to prove it. I will dig it up, scan it, and post it for the blogosphere.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I can see boj at Tetris, but the Hammetts at Mario and Zelda? Come on. There is a chance that could happen. They are talented and have some very nice natural speed. But on the topic of conversions, they were playing only with themselves in the basement in Rhode Island. I'm generously giving them 5 extra points, but to suggest they are worth anything more right now is based on hype and no reality. It also doesn't help to compare winning scores with performances in competitive gaming. Sure Gregg was good in Mario Kart for Nintendo, but if pushed (like on a WII) could he have gone much faster? I imagine...

  20. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!! I'm dying! Hey obvious stater, have you ever raced me in Mario Kart? I thought not, if so I would smoke you with a red shell and dust your ass!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Mike i agree, i could never beat metroid, it might have to do with not being able to sit still but it was really hard. I'm going to bump it up a notch and say that NBA jam and mario kart for SNES are two of the best games.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah NBA Jam was good, a new school NES game. What about Double Dribble? The close up dunks were cool. i used to rep the Boston Frogs all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It almost looked like Larry Bird doing a reverse dunk in the close ups. It couldn't have been though. I can hear the stupid basketball bouncing now and the sneakers squeeking on the floor when I picture double dribble.

    ReplyDelete
  24. everyone knows i perved out on tetris but with the remaining 1.5 percent of my nintendo time i liked playing blades of steel and bases loaded. there were some memorable/annoying sound effects on those games too.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't really remember Bases Loaded. I do remember Roger Clemens Baseball which was pretty weak. Three other sports games I liked were Tecmo Bowl (Bo Jackson was unbelievable) Rad Racer (killed my thumbs), and Slalom. Really hard game.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bo Jackson could be stopped, just select run 1 defense and make em run with Allen. Not nearly as explosive. This thread is viral!!! What up obvious stater?
Dave, I love the hurricane force blow comment. That was a must in 1988, I can just imagine now!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Untouchable in Tecmo with the bears...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Tecmo was the best, Bo Jackson could not be stopped we had to put a "no raiders" rule into effect

    ReplyDelete
  29. bo jackson was superhuman. it was tough to watch him go down that time he got the career killing tackle. was that the only time he ever got tackled ? (in real games and tecmo)

    ReplyDelete
  30. The Bo Jackson action figure didn't sell too well though. I think it was called Boj Action. I actually had one.

    ReplyDelete
  31. production of the boj-action action figure came to a screeching halt when the company (fisher-price or mattel or whatever the hell it was)found out that my 40 yd dash time was 6.5 seconds. i didnt know any made it onto the shelves. if you have one, its probably worth some serious bank.

    ReplyDelete
  32. did anyone ever play castlevania ? i liked that game when i was really young, when i hadnt yet realized that i could get 523,000 points by making lines with shapes.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i remember Castlevania had cool music that's it. Just another game i got easily frustrated with. How about Arkanoid? That's sort of on the Tetris tip, a skill game.

    ReplyDelete
  34. never heard of that one. dr mario was good too. cant believe i didnt think of that earlier. this thread has gotten outta control. its friggin awesome. i have decided that im going on a quest to find a nintendo and the tetris game, and try to beat my high score. it might be tough since i havent played it in at least ten years and i dont know if its even possible to buy that stuff anymore. im feeling inspired tho. it might happen.

    ReplyDelete
  35. http://cgi.ebay.com/NINTENDO-GAME-SYSTEM-ORIGINAL-MARIO-TETRIS-TURTLES-/230576917842?pt=Video_Games&hash=item35af748d52

Copy & paste then get practicing. Although, you should beware. Stacking blocks will seriously interfer with your running economy and turnover rate.

    Just sayin...

  36. All this mario Kart talk has got me thinking there is going to be a epic mario kart battle, then i started to think even more, and realized that this is almost like the movie the wizard. Minus the autistic kid, fred savage and some creepy kissing scene with young kids, so maybe its nothing like the movie at all, if you havent seen the Wizard dont it was good in the late 80's but is awful now......yeah i watched it again

    ReplyDelete
  37. Here's another legendary game; Pro Wrestling. My favorite was Starman. Let's keep this rolling till New Bedford....

    ReplyDelete
  38. hell yeah i think we can get 100 comments by then. i was on amazon looking at games and they have some for 1 cent. pro wrestling might have been one of them. i saw tetris for 2 bucks. i have a friend checking closets for a nintendo. wheels are in motion. dave i saw 'the wizard' in theatres. i saw it on tv not too long ago too. totally ridiculous movie, and i agree with everything you said about it. also, that kid was good, but i know one game he couldnt touch me on, and im technically not even autistic (hammetts, your cue to jump in) like he was.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Starman was a bitch. The Amazon (doing that biting thing) and Giant Panther and that Iron Claw shit were the two nastiest hustlaz on that game.

Boj, I'm coming up to NH at the end of July for a week or so. I'm bringing some retro gaming. Be ready.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I knew someone would same Amazon, but I'll go with the finesse style of Starman i don't give a shit. Those kicks were insane.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I liked the guy that could do kicks to the head. He had a quick back breaker move where you just tapped one button, it was hard to stop. I don't remember his name. He was plain looking, brown hair, black speedo. Starman was pretty good with his back flip kicks and flying shoulder.

    ReplyDelete
  42. id like to get in on this debate but i never played that game. i feel like i missed out on something cool.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Greg, I think you may be thinking of King Slender. I recall Fighter Hayabusa had a sick kick to the back of the head. i know way too much about this game. If Pro Wrestling was a grand prix, I'd kick ass.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Damn, Mike, you're right. I was combining two guys. Fighter Hayabusa was the guy with the kick and I liked using him, but King Slender was the guy with the quick back breaker. I used both those guys a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I used Star Man, but this game soon become "un-fun". Greg was too good. He and Jonny were the best at any games involving quickness with the buttons. I was better at the one player epic adventure games. Shout out to the Castlevania mention.

Not Nintendo, but Boj do you remember B-Williams. Now that guy was unstoppable!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. ya glenny, b williams was the man in madden 99. i guess that can be considered a one player epic adventure game since it was you, not the computer that got him 50 sacks in one season. for defenses it was an epic nightmare. it didnt matter which play i picked, i couldnt stop him. one thing thats funny to me is that i never heard of him getting any sacks in real games.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Boj remember when you used to save over the madden season.........every........damn..........night, HA

    ReplyDelete
  48. i wonder what happened more- me saving over the wrong season or you tripping on the controller cord and pulling it out.

    ReplyDelete
  49. i think it was me tripping over the cord, i just finished a session with mario kart for snes.....fucking donkey kong and his bananas

    ReplyDelete
  50. Were you guys at a sleep over or something? Little footsie pajamas? So cute.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Baseball Stars, a game ahead of its time. Anyone play it?

    ReplyDelete
  52. One weekend a few of my buddies and I rented NeoGeo and got Baseball Stars... talk about a game ahead of it's time... It was a good game for Nintendo, but for NeoGeo it was like being there...

    ReplyDelete
  53. yo cash, dont worry about me, man. i think its you and obvious hater that have been having too many sleepovers. you guys really seem like youre on the same page. they might have to create a new olympic event for you guys called synchronized hating.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I still own it...it was (IS) awesome...naturally, I was the American team (Hank, Joe, etc)...they were the best...I loved beating up on the Monsters (Jason, Freddie, Damien, etc) and that team of asian women that threw submarine...some of them were hot.

Might go play it right now instead of running in this freezing sleet and feces.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The Monsters were underrated. I used to build my own team, which I thought was a cool idea. It's strange to think a team like Chris Sabo, Alan Trammall, and tony Gwynn could beat up on a team like the Dreams who had all the hall of famers.

    ReplyDelete
  56. no school. snow day. damn i wish i had a nintendo.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Viral comment thread is viral.

I sucked at all video games. If I had to choose a NES avatar, I'd be Glass Joe.

    ReplyDelete
  58. thats ok, cuz in real life youre karate bob and you kill dudes by removal of testicles. i dont think the rest of us have that ability. i know i dont.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Excite bike was ahead of its time, the ramps that you could go off of and jump off the screen come on it was like really riding a dirt bike or moped, not to mention you could hammer the B button and kick it up a gear.......only down fall was the stupid over heating

    ReplyDelete
  60. Excite Bike:
I liked building tracks. A good track had to have at least a couple H's leading into an R. If you were good, you could jump over the entire R. I liked the overheating, of course we always built tracks so that wouldn't happen.
Also an S with an E waiting on the other end was a good combo for track building.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I started off with Excitebike early on but then moved on to classic titles like Double Dragon, Rush N' Attack, Arch Rivals (underated as hell), Dragon Warrior (for RPG types), Metal Gear...

I was a beast when I was still too young to worry about stupid things like beers, bills, and getting laid.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The Excitebike driver was known for his "phat jumps".

    ReplyDelete
  63. uh oh, we might have stalled out here. i know rule #17 is dont be a hero, but its crunch time and we need a clutch performance from someone.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm in the mood for Duck Hunt. Just feel like shooting things.

    ReplyDelete
  65. nice work, mike. were back in business! i played some duck hunt back in the day. i used to pretend i was a cowboy in a shootout. i dont know why i did that cuz i dont think cowboys ever shot at ducks.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Maybe because you were used to playing Wild Gunman.

    ReplyDelete
  67. i dont know that one. but as we speak im playing nba jam 2011. its almost exactly the same as the original. awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  68. duck was amazing i considered myself pretty good but was awful at the clay target shooting one

    ReplyDelete
  69. i foung some tetris playing on you tube and the score maxes out at 999,999. but then i found out those pussbags were using cheats! tool assisted games is what they were calling it. so lame! it slows down the game so you can get up to level 30, and you always get the blocks you need. i give that as much credibilty as barry bonds hr record. i got 523,000 points in tetris using my own brain and hands. those cheaters suck.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I can't stand cheating with video games, i'm even anti warp zone. sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  71. yeah adults shouldnt be allowed to use cheats. i guess its ok for like a five year old tho. unless the kid beats my tetris score.

    ReplyDelete
